Bunions

What are bunions?

A bunion begins with a deviation of the big toe. As it crowds into the other toes, the joint becomes strained and begins to protrude, creating a permanent swelling on the side of the foot. Bunions often worsen over time as irritation and inflammation of the joint increase.

Causes

Bunions cause discomfort or pain as they are put under constant pressure. As the enlargement rubs continually against the shoe, the skin in that area may also become irritated and tender. Bunions are caused by:

An inherited structural defect;

By stress on the foot or a medical condition like arthritis;

Injuries, flat feet or pronation;

A walking pattern that puts extra pressure on the toes;

Wearing tight shoes can make the problem worse by irritating the joint, but it is not enough to cause the condition.

Since we depend so much upon on the joint of the big toe for walking, bunions often worsen over time. Left untreated, bunions may grow bigger, leading to chronic pain, difficulty walking and in some cases deformities.

Treatment

Bunion pain can be eased through various treatments available at the Orleans Dynamic Foot Clinic. Protective padding and orthotic devices can help by relieving pressure and minimizing irritation to the area. These measures can also help prevent bunions from worsening. In more severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove the bunion and realign the toe.

The first step towards feeling better on your feet is contacting the clinic for a consultation. You can book your appointment on our website or call us at (613) 424-9339.
