Plantar Warts

What are plantar warts?

Plantar warts are small growths that are on the soles of the foot. Since they usually occur on the heels, it causes pain because walking puts pressure on it. This pain can cause noticeable limping and limitations to daily activities.

Causes

Plantar warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The virus enters through any small opening in the skin’s surface, like tiny cuts or breaks.

Plantar warts can happen to anyone, but they are most common in tennages between the ages 12-16.

Warts are passed from one person to another, either by direct touch or sharing things like socks or shoes. Walking barefoot in a place where the virus may lurk – warm, moist and busy environments like pools or locker rooms – is another way they can be contracted.

The incubation period of the HPV infection can last up to twelve months. Therefore, the wart takes time to show up from when you got infected by the virtues.

Warts should be dealt with before they spread or cause pain. They are stubborn and usually require intervention. Consult a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine for a proper diagnosis and treatment. You can book an appointment on our website or call us at (613) 424-9339 to help identify your issue.

Symptoms and Treatments

Plantar wart symptoms include:

Varys in colour- flesh, white, tan, or pink.

Cauliflower texture with small black dots or lines- this should not be confused with calluses or corns, which are patches of thick skin.

Pain when walking or standing.

Plantar warts are contagious to you and to others. The infection is likely to be transmitted to others by walking barefoot in warm and moist environments (pools and locker rooms). If untreated, the infection will get bigger, become more difficult to treat and spread to other areas. Often, most over-the-counter wart treatments do not end up working.

Avoid self-diagnosis – be sure your bumps are correctly identified before starting any treatment. Here at Orleans Dynamic Foot Clinic, we offer three levels of treatment, Topical, Cryoprobe and Swift Microwave.

Avoid self-diagnosis – be sure your bumps are correctly identified before starting any treatment. Here at Orleans Dynamic Foot Clinic, we offer three levels of treatment, Topical, Cryoprobe and Swift Microwave.

Cryoprobe

In Podiatry, Cryoprobe is used to freeze plantar warts, or verruca’s, to remove infected tissue and treat the warts. Cryoprobe uses liquid nitrogen to create extremely cold temperatures to destroy diseased tissue, such as the tissue found in plantar warts on feet. Once the diseased tissue is destroyed, the skin can heal, and healthy tissue can form in its place. Cryoprobe treatment lasts seconds and feels similar to having an ice cube pressed against your skin. This discomfort is momentary and usually subsides within seconds.

Swift Wart Treatment

To say that warts are a pain in the backside would be an understatement. They are unsightly, uncomfortable and can be very difficult to get rid of. Nobody likes warts! At Orleans Dynamic Foot clinic, we invest in equipment that helps us to achieve the desired outcome as quickly as possible. This is why we purchased a Swift microwave therapy machine. Swift is the revolutionary new alternative to painful cryotherapy, topical acids and cautery / hyfrecation.

What is Swift microwave therapy?

Swift microwave therapy is a new, minimally-invasive treatment for warts (Verrucae). The microwaves generated by the Swift work to elicit an immune response so your own body can recognise and fight the wart.

Microwaves are a form of non-ionising radiation, which means that they can not cause damage to the DNA of living things. Swift uses very low energy levels that are only able to vibrate water molecules within skin cells.

How do I know if Swift microwave therapy will help me?

Initial studies are showing an effectiveness or resolution rate of approximately 80% which includes stubborn warts that have failed other treatments.

Each patient needs to be assessed by a Podiatrist / Chiropodist prior to pursuing this treatment option. At the Orleans Dynamic Foot Clinic we will explain the pros and cons of each treatment option and make a recommendation based on your individual circumstances.
